Employees at The Botanist are the first cannabis workers to join UFCW Local 152 union

Starbucks and Amazon employees aren’t the only ones with unions on their minds. Staff at cannabis manufacturer and retailer The Botanist have now joined the ranks of cannabis employees represented by a union. Workers at the Egg Harbor Township and Atlantic City locations have agreed to be represented by their local chapter of the United Food and Commercial Workers union, UFCW Local 152.

More than 60 workers across the two locations will join the union upon certification of the agreement. Union representatives will then negotiate the first contract terms on behalf of the new members. The new memberships represent the first cannabis workers to join the local chapter.

UFCW began in 1979 and the Local 152 group was founded in 2006 after other local unions merged. The chapter is led by Brian String, who served as President of Local 1358 from 1997 through 2005 before the merge. UFCW Local 152 now represents about 14,000 members across New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.

“This new partnership is a win for all involved,” String said. “These workers will be able to decide on the terms of their employment and The Botanist will maintain a dedicated and knowledgeable staff.
