What’s on the table? Senators to meet and discuss cannabis legislation today

At this point, we know not to read too much into yet another discussion about cannabis reform. With that said, we’re still curious to know what might go down in today’s meeting with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democratic senators. No Republican senators have been reported to attend the meeting.

John Bresnahan of Punchbowl News tweeted this morning that Senator Schumer will be meeting today with senators Cory Booker, Jeff Merkley, and Jacky Rosen, as well as Senate Banking Committee Chairman Sherrod Brown, to discuss cannabis legislation.

The meeting comes after last year’s failed comprehensive legalization bill put forth by Schumer and Booker. After it became clear that there was not enough support for the bill in the Senate, Schumer attempted a last-ditch effort to get cannabis banking on the country’s spending bill, but the attempt was shot down when Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Banking Committee Ranking Member Pat Toomey objected to the move.

We’re not sure what’s on the docket for today’s meeting. Marijuana Moment suggests they’ll pick up where they left off previously, focusing on the SAFE Plus package that includes legislation for cannabis banking and expungements.

The White House was asked about cannabis banking reform last week. Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre responded saying that the administration has no current plans to resolve the issue, leaving it up to Congress.
