School just got cooler for students at the University of British Columbia, where Burb Cannabis Corp. received approval to open a cannabis retail store on campus. The approval from the Metro Vancouver Regional District (MVRD) Board of Directors puts Burb at eight locations in British Columbia, which is the maximum allowed for any single retailer in the province.
The move is history-making, as Burb will be the first-ever cannabis retailer approved to operate on a major university campus. And it wasn’t easy.
“This was a big victory for us after a contentious debate around public safety and community fit,” said co-founder and CEO of Burb, John Kaye. “Despite concerns grounded in age-old stigma from nearby residents, many of whom were off-shore residential owners, the Board made an informed decision that aligned with the overwhelming voice of the student body as well as the tenets of legalization in our country. We’re beyond excited to bring Burb to campus and provide safe access to students and residents this fall.”
Beyond Canada, the company is also expanding its US presence. After launching in California this spring, Burb has announced wholesale success in the state. Since launch, products have scaled to more than fifty stores, including Cookies, Harborside, and Urbn Leaf. Following the success, the company has announced plans to launch in Florida this fall through an exclusive partnership with Cookies.
